You're Not Behind

Your coworkers keep mentioning AI like it’s obvious. Your feed is full of people doing incredible things with it. It’s easy to look at all that and assume everyone else already gets it.

That assumption is almost universal. And it’s wrong.

Many of the people who look like AI experts started just a few months before you did. That’s the gap. Months.

These tools, in the form regular people actually use, are only a few years old. A few years at best. Most of the features everyone talks about are months old. Nobody has decades of experience. The entire world is figuring it out in public, at the same time, right now.

I’ve had this conversation over and over at AI conferences and meetups… people talking confidently about deploying agents and reorganizing their whole company around this. And then, almost every time, the same admission: they’re making it up as they go. Trying things, seeing what sticks. The people furthest ahead aren’t ahead because they stopped being confused. They’re just slightly less confused than you are, and comfortable forging ahead anyway.

And here’s what the gap is actually made of… not secret knowledge… just reps. Hours of asking, getting weird answers, and slowly building a feel for it.

There’s no prerequisite reading list. You don’t need a course, a certification, or a YouTube playlist before you’re allowed to open a chat window. Every “10 things you must know before using AI” article is someone monetizing your hesitation.

What you actually need is about 10 minutes and a topic you care about to get started.

The feeling of being behind thrives on comparison and dies on contact. The moment you’re actually in a conversation with one of these tools, working on something real, the question stops being “am I behind?” and becomes “huh! what else can this do?”

That second question is a much better place to live.

There’s one more reason to start now instead of someday: this compounds. The tools keep getting more capable, and the people using them keep getting more fluent. Both curves bending up at once. The gap between you and someone slightly ahead stays small. But the gap between someone who started and someone who didn’t widens every month, because starting is the only thing that puts you on the curve at all.

So no, you’re not behind. Behind implies a race with a pack that’s miles ahead. It’s more like everyone’s in the parking lot of a trailhead, tying their shoes, comparing maps nobody can read yet.
